Apple 'Ariane' is a modern, disease-resistant apple variety developed in France. It is prized for its sweet, aromatic flavor, crisp texture, and attractive red skin. This variety was specifically bred to resist common apple diseases like scab, making it a great choice for home gardeners and organic orchards.

Origin & Breeding
Ariane' was developed by French researchers at INRAE (National Institute for Agricultural Research) in Angers, France. It is the result of a cross between disease-resistant and flavorful apple varieties, with the goal of producing a high-quality eating apple that requires fewer chemical treatments.

Fruit Characteristics
  • Size: Medium-sized, round apples
  • Skin: Deep red with a smooth, glossy surface
  • Flesh: Pale yellow, dense, and juicy
  • Flavor: Sweet with a slight tartness, aromatic and well-balanced
  • Storage: Keeps well for several months when stored in a cool place
Tree Characteristics
  • Growth Habit: Medium to vigorous, well-branched
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination with varieties like 'Gala', 'Fuji', or 'Golden Delicious'
  • Flowering Time: Mid-season
  • Harvest Time: Typically harvested in mid to late autumn
Disease ResistanceOne of 'Ariane's' standout features is its high resistance to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), making it a great choice for low-spray or organic orchards. It also shows some resistance to powdery mildew and fire blight.
Growing Conditions
  • Climate: Suitable for temperate regions with distinct seasons
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil with good moisture retention
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun for best fruit production
  • Pruning: Annual pruning encourages good airflow and fruiting wood
Uses'Ariane' is an excellent fresh-eating apple, but it also works well for:
  • Salads (due to its crisp texture)
  • Juicing
  • Light baking (though it is not a cooking apple like 'Granny Smith')
Why Grow 'Ariane'?✔ Naturally disease-resistant (less need for fungicide sprays)
✔ Sweet, aromatic flavour that rivals popular apples like 'Gala'
✔ Low-maintenance for home gardeners
✔ Good storage life
