The ‘Fuji’ apple tree (Malus domestica ‘Fuji’) is a popular and highly regarded variety, known for its crisp texture, juicy sweetness, and excellent storage capabilities. Requires winter frosts to help set fruit. Tip bearing. Originally developed in Japan in the 1930s by crossing ‘Red Delicious’ and ‘Ralls Janet,’ ‘Fuji’ apples have gained global popularity due to their outstanding flavor and long shelf life.
Fruit Characteristics
  • Flavour: Exceptionally sweet with a hint of tartness
  • Texture: Crisp and firm
  • Colour: Red-orange blush over a yellow-green background
  • Harvest Time: Mid to late season (typically March to May in New Zealand)
  • Storage: Excellent; can be kept for months with proper refrigeration
M26 Rootstock BenefitsThe M26 rootstock is a semi-dwarfing rootstock that keeps the tree relatively compact while still providing good vigor and productivity.
  • Size: Grows to around 2.5–3.5 meters tall
  • Early Fruiting: Encourages early and consistent fruit production
  • Good Productivity: Produces high-quality fruit with excellent size
  • Ease of Maintenance: Smaller stature makes it ideal for home orchards, espalier training, and easy harvesting
  • Soil Adaptability: Prefers well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods
  • Support: May require staking in early years due to slightly weaker anchorage
  • Pollinators include Mid-Late flowering varieties such as: Tydemans Late Orange, Splendour, Sturmer Pippin & Worcester Permain.
The combination of ‘Fuji’ on M26 makes for a great home garden or small orchard apple tree—manageable in size yet still delivering a generous harvest of delicious, sweet apples.
