The ‘Liberty’ apple tree is a modern, disease-resistant variety known for its attractive red blushed apples that have crisp texture, sweet-tart flavour, and reliable productivity. Widely accepted as tops in flavour of the early apples bred for disease resistance. Developed in the United States by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1970s, ‘Liberty’ was bred for resistance to common apple diseases, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for home growers and organic orchards.
Fruit Characteristics
  • Flavour: Well-balanced, sweet with a touch of tartness
  • Texture: Crisp and juicy
  • Colour: Deep red skin with occasional green undertones
  • Harvest Time: Mid-season (March to April in New Zealand)
  • Storage: Stores well for up to 2–3 months in refrigeration
Growth & Care
  • Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to apple scab, cedar apple rust, powdery mildew, and fire blight
  • Pollination: Liberty is a self fertile variety so requires no pollinator, however fruiting can be assisted by the planting of pollinators nearby.Pollinators include Early flowering varieties such as: Braeburn, Discovery, Egremont Russet as well as any of the Ballerina series.
  • Size & Growth Habit: Medium-sized tree with a spreading, upright habit.
  • Soil & Watering: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with regular watering
  • Pruning: Annual pruning encourages fruiting and improves air circulation

Best Uses
  • Fresh Eating: Sweet, crisp, and refreshing
  • Baking & Cooking: Holds its shape well for pies and desserts
