The ‘Cluthagold’ apricot is a premium New Zealand variety, prized for its large, golden fruit, rich flavour, and excellent productivity. Developed in Central Otago, this cultivar is well-suited to New Zealand’s temperate climate and performs particularly well in areas with cold winters and warm, dry summers. Cluthagold is a cross between a Sundrop and a Moorpark. This tree is very hardy and has a vigourous, spreading habit and produces fruit that ripens two weeks after Sundrop and one day before Moorpark.
Fruit Characteristics
  • Flavour: Sweet and rich with a classic apricot tang
  • Texture: Firm, juicy, and smooth-fleshed
  • Colour: Golden-yellow skin with occasional orange blush
  • Size: Large, uniform fruit
  • Harvest Time: Mid to late season (January to February in New Zealand)
  • Storage: Good; holds well post-harvest for fresh consumption and processing
Growth & Care
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile but produces better crops with another apricot variety nearby (e.g., ‘Sundrop’ or ‘Moorpark’)
  • Tree Size: Medium to large with a spreading growth habit
  • Chill Requirement: Requires a cold winter to ensure good flowering and fruit set
  • Soil & Watering: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during fruit development
  • Pruning: Best pruned in late summer to encourage airflow and reduce disease risk
Best Uses
  • Fresh Eating: Deliciously sweet and juicy straight from the tree
  • Preserving: Excellent for jams, drying, and bottling
  • Baking & Desserts: Ideal for tarts, crumbles, and fruit salads
With its high-quality fruit, reliable production, and adaptability to New Zealand conditions, ‘Cluthagold’ apricot is a fantastic choice for home orchards and commercial growers looking for a top-tier apricot variety.
