The ‘Moorpark’ apricot is a classic, heirloom variety that has been cherished for a long time due to its rich, sweet flavor and excellent versatility. It is a mid to late-season variety, producing large, golden-orange fruit with a deep, aromatic taste which are freestone. Well-suited to cooler climates, ‘Moorpark’ thrives in areas with cold winters and warm summers, making it a great choice for New Zealand growers.
Fruit Characteristics
  • Flavour: Intensely sweet and aromatic, with a hint of tanginess
  • Texture: Juicy and smooth with firm flesh
  • Colour: Golden-orange skin, sometimes with a red blush
  • Size: Large, round fruit
  • Harvest Time: Mid to late season (January to February in New Zealand)
  • Storage: Good; can be eaten fresh or preserved
Growth & Care
  • Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but better crops are achieved with another apricot variety nearby (e.g., ‘Trevatt’ or ‘Katy Cot’)
  • Tree Size: Medium to large with a spreading habit
  • Chill Requirement: Requires a cold winter for strong flowering and fruiting
  • Soil & Watering: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering during fruit development
  • Pruning: Best pruned in late summer to maintain airflow, remove dead wood, and encourage fruiting
Best Uses
  • Fresh Eating: Exceptionally sweet and juicy when tree-ripened
  • Preserving: Excellent for jams, bottling, and drying due to its rich flavor
  • Baking & Cooking: Ideal for apricot crumbles, tarts, and sauces
With its outstanding flavour, large fruit, and versatility, the ‘Moorpark’ apricot remains one of the most popular choices for home orchards, delivering delicious fruit year after year.
