The ‘Lapins’ cherry is a self-fertile, sweet cherry variety that produces large, dark red fruit with an exceptionally juicy and sweet flavour. Bred in Canada, ‘Lapins’ is known for its high yields, high crack resistance, and excellent fruit quality, making it a favourite among home gardeners and commercial growers alike. It thrives in temperate climates and is well-suited to regions with cold winters and warm summers. This precocious variety is now a commercial mainstay in many areas of NZ

Fruit Characteristics
  • Flavour: Exceptionally sweet and juicy, similar to ‘Bing’ cherries
  • Texture: Firm and crisp
  • Colour: Deep red to dark mahogany when fully ripe
  • Size: Large, plump fruit (often larger than ‘Bing’)
  • Harvest Time: Mid to late season (December to January in New Zealand)
  • Storage: Stores well and retains flavour and firmness in refrigeration
Growth & Care
  • Pollination: Self-fertile, meaning it does not require another cherry tree for fruiting, but planting alongside other varieties (e.g., ‘Stella’ or ‘Bing’) can enhance yields
  • Tree Size: Medium to large with a vigorous, spreading growth habit
  • Chill Requirement: Requires moderate winter chilling for optimal flowering and fruit set
  • Soil & Watering: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from consistent watering during flowering and fruit development
  • Pruning: Best pruned in late summer to maintain size, encourage fruiting, and improve airflow
Best Uses
  • Fresh Eating: One of the sweetest and juiciest cherries, perfect for snacking
  • Baking & Desserts: Great for cherry pies, cakes, and tarts
  • Preserving: Excellent for making jams, sauces, and freezing
  • Beverages: Ideal for juicing or making cherry-based liqueurs
With its self-fertility, heavy crops, and outstanding fruit quality, the ‘Lapins’ cherry is an ideal choice for home gardeners and orchardists seeking a reliable and delicious cherry variety.
