Pear ‘Doyenné du Comice’ is a highly esteemed French heritage variety, often considered one of the finest dessert pears in the world. Renowned for its exceptional sweetness, rich aroma, and buttery texture, this pear is a must-have for any home orchard or fruit enthusiast.
Key Features: Fruit: Large, round, and slightly squat with a golden-green skin that may develop a red blush when sun-ripened. The flesh is incredibly juicy, melting, and fragrant, with a luxuriously sweet flavour.
Tree Size: Grows to 4–5 meters but can be kept smaller with regular pruning.
Sun Requirements: Thrives in full sun. And must have some winter frosts for the best fruit production.
Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but produces better yields with a pollination partner like ‘Williams Bon Chrétien’, ‘Beurré Bosc’, Winter Cole, Winter Nelis, Nashi Hosui and Nashi Nijiseiki.
Harvest Time: Late autumn, typically in April–May in New Zealand.
Watering: Prefers consistent moisture, especially in dry periods, but needs well-draining soil.
