Plum ‘English Greengage’ is one of the most beloved and prized varieties of plums, renowned for its exceptional sweetness, juiciness, and rich, aromatic flavour. Known as the “queen of plums”, the English Greengage has been grown for centuries, originating in Europe and considered one of the best varieties for both fresh eating and cooking.
Key Features: Fruit: Small to medium-sized, with green skin that turns a rich golden-yellow when fully ripe. The flesh is dense, juicy, and sweet, with a delicate and complex flavor that’s often described as honeyed or nectar-like.
Tree Size: Typically grows to 3–4 meters, making it a good choice for smaller gardens or orchards.
Sun Requirements: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate light shade. It requires plenty of sunlight to produce the best fruit.
Pollination: Partially self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruit on its own, but will yield better if planted near other plum varieties for cross-pollination. Pollinators include - Coe’s Golden Drop, Damson, Reine Claude de Bavay and Italian.
Harvest Time: Late summer to early autumn, usually around February–March in New Zealand.
Watering: Prefers consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruit development. Make sure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging.

Growing & Care Tips:
  • Pruning: Prune after harvesting to remove dead or crossing branches, and to maintain an open, airy canopy.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer to encourage strong growth and healthy fruiting.
  • Thinning: Thin the fruit to ensure the remaining plums have enough space to develop fully.
  • Harvesting: Pick plums when they are fully ripe, with a slight give when gently squeezed. Allow them to ripen on the tree for the best flavor, but be sure to harvest before they fall to the ground.
Why Grow ‘English Greengage’?
  • Exceptional Flavor: Sweet, juicy, and complex—perfect for eating fresh, making jam, preserves, or desserts.
  • High Yields: Despite the small tree size, it produces abundant fruit that’s perfect for home gardeners.
  • Cold Hardy: More resilient to colder climates compared to some other plum varieties, making it a great option for a range of gardens.
English Greengage plums are a true treat, with their rich taste and versatile uses. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh or using them in your favorite recipes, this classic plum variety is sure to be a favorite in your garden!
