Plum ‘Reine Claude de Bavay’, often known as the "Bavay Green Gage", is a stunning and highly prized European plum variety renowned for its sweet, juicy flesh and refined, complex flavor. This variety is a direct descendant of the Greengage plums, known for their excellent dessert qualities and versatility in the kitchen. With its beautiful greenish-yellow skin and golden flesh, this plum is often considered one of the finest plums for both eating fresh and preserving.
Key Features: Fruit: Medium-sized, with a greenish-yellow skin that matures to a soft golden hue. The flesh is sweet, smooth, and rich with a touch of acidity, offering a nectar-like flavor that is both refreshing and aromatic.
Tree Size: Grows to about 4–5 meters in height, making it a manageable size for most gardens while still offering generous fruit yields.
Sun Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and fruit production but can tolerate light shade.
Pollination: Partially self-fertile, although a second plum tree for cross-pollination will boost fruit yield and quality.
Harvest Time: Late summer to early autumn—typically February–March in New Zealand.
Watering: Prefers consistent moisture, especially during fruit development, but requires well-drained soil to avoid root rot.

Growing & Care Tips:
- Pruning: Prune in winter or early spring to remove any dead or diseased wood, and to maintain a well-shaped tree. Regular pruning encourages better air circulation and helps the tree focus energy on producing fruit.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring to encourage growth, and a potassium-rich feed in late summer to support fruiting.
- Thinning: Thin out excess fruit while small to ensure remaining plums grow larger and more flavorful.
- Harvesting: Best harvested when ripe, as the flavour continues to develop after picking. Gently squeeze to test for ripeness—fully ripe plums will give slightly under pressure.
