A highly productive raspberry plant that has few spines and produce large firm easily removed shiny medium-red fruit. Its large, attractive, glossy, and firm fruit coupled with very good yields are particularly suited to the fresh market. Harvest the berries from December to January an then an autumn crop starting from March

Key Features:Fruit: Large, juicy, and sweet raspberries that have a wonderful flavour—ideal for fresh eating, making jams, or adding to desserts. The berries have a rich red colour when ripe and a firm yet tender texture.
Growth Habit: ‘Lewis’ is a vigorous and upright plant, growing to about 1.5–2 meters in height. Its canes are strong and produce an abundance of berries, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a high-yielding variety.
Sun Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal fruit production, but it can tolerate light shade.
Hardiness: Known for being hardy and cold-tolerant, making it well-suited for New Zealand’s cooler regions as well as warmer areas.
Harvest Time: Early to mid-season, with the berries typically ready for harvest in summer—usually December–January in New Zealand.
Watering: Needs consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Be sure to water deeply and ensure the soil is well-draining to avoid waterlogging.

Growing & Care Tips:
  • Pruning: After harvest, prune out the old canes that have already fruited to make space for new growth. Regular pruning ensures the plant remains healthy and productive year after year.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil temperature consistent.
  • Fertilizing: Raspberries like a well-fed soil, so apply a balanced fertilizer or compost in the spring to support strong growth and fruiting.
  • Harvesting: Harvest the raspberries when they are fully ripe—they should easily come off the plant when gently pulled. Ripe berries are a rich, vibrant red and will have a slightly soft texture.
