Honey Locust – Thornless (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis) -
Mature height 15 - 20m
The thornless honey locust is a graceful, fast-growing deciduous tree known for its feathery, bright green foliage, dappled shade, and golden autumn colour. Fragrant Spring flowers are followed by long brown pods, which are edible by stock. Unlike its wild counterpart, this cultivated variety is free of thorns, making it a much safer and more garden-friendly choice.
Deciduous
Perfect for planting over lawns, paddocks, patios, or garden beds where other plants need light to thrive.
Low Maintenance: Drought-tolerant, adaptable to a wide range of soil types, and resistant to pests and diseases—ideal for low-maintenance gardens.
Non-Invasive Roots: Unlike some large trees, the honey locust’s root system is less likely to damage pavements or underground pipes, making it suitable for streetscapes and suburban gardens.
Wildlife Friendly: The small, fragrant spring flowers attract pollinators such as bees, while birds enjoy sheltering in its branches.
Sun Requirements: Thrives in full sun for best growth and autumn colour.
Soil Preferences: Adaptable to most soils, including clay, sandy, and loamy soils, and tolerates drought once established.
