Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon' – Sweet Gum Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon', commonly known as Worplesdon Sweet Gum, is a striking deciduous tree prized for its spectacular autumn colour, graceful shape, and attractive, deeply lobed leaves. A refined selection of the American sweet gum, ‘Worplesdon’ is especially valued for its consistent, rich autumn hues and more uniform growth habit than the species.
Key Features: Breathtaking Autumn Colour: One of the standout features of 'Worplesdon' is its fiery autumn display, where leaves transform from green to shades of gold, orange, crimson, and deep purple. Unlike some sweet gums, it colours reliably even in milder climates.
Distinctive Foliage: The deeply lobed, maple-like leaves provide a beautiful texture throughout the growing season, emerging fresh green in spring and creating a lush, vibrant canopy in summer.
Elegant Shape & Growth: A tall, upright tree with a well-balanced, pyramidal habit, ‘Worplesdon’ reaches around 12–18 meters in height with a spread of 6–8 meters, making it a fantastic feature tree for gardens, parks, and avenues.
Less Fruit Drop: Unlike the standard Liquidambar, 'Worplesdon' tends to produce fewer spiky seed pods, making it a cleaner choice for gardens and urban areas.
Tough & Adaptable: Tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay and damp ground, this variety is wind-resistant and hardy, making it well-suited for many environments.
Growing & Care Tips:
  • Sun Requirements: Thrives in full sun for the best autumn color.
  • Soil Preferences: Adaptable to most soils but prefers moist, well-draining conditions. Tolerates acidic and neutral soils well.
  • Watering: Water well when young; once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in dry spells.
  • Pruning: Generally low-maintenance, only requiring occasional shaping in winter if needed.
Why Grow Liquidambar 'Worplesdon'?✔ Incredible seasonal beauty with lush summer foliage and vibrant autumn tones.
✔ Perfect for large gardens, paddocks or as a stunning standalone feature tree.
✔ More predictable autumn colour and less fruit litter compared to the species.
✔ Hardy, wind-resistant, and adaptable to various growing conditions.

If you're looking for a magnificent tree that delivers year-round beauty and dazzling autumn colour, Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon' is an excellent choice
