Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) – A Stunning Four-Season Tree 🍂🌳✨The Black Tupelo, also known as Black Gum, is a spectacular deciduous tree admired for its glossy green leaves, brilliant autumn colour, and strong, adaptable nature. Native to North America, this tree thrives in a variety of landscapes and is a favorite for adding seasonal beauty, shade, and wildlife interest to gardens and paddocks.
Key Features:Lush Summer Foliage: The deep green, glossy leaves provide a dense, elegant canopy that casts cooling shade in summer.
Fiery Autumn Colour: One of the most brilliant fall foliage trees, the Black Tupelo’s leaves turn shades of scarlet, orange, yellow, and deep purple, often all at once, creating a dazzling multi-tonal display.
Graceful, Strong Growth Habit: Growing to 15–25 meters tall, with a pyramidal to rounded shape, this long-lived tree develops a deeply furrowed bark that resembles alligator skin, adding winter interest.
Small Spring Flowers & Wildlife Value: Tiny greenish-white flowers appear in spring, attracting pollinators, followed by small, dark blue fruits in autumn that are loved by birds.
Growing & Care Tips:Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade for best growth and autumn color.
Soil: Thrives in moist, well-draining, acidic soil but adapts to different conditions, including clay and sandy soils.
Watering: Appreciates consistent moisture, making it an excellent choice for damp areas or near ponds. Once established, it can tolerate some drought.
Pruning: Minimal pruning needed—just remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter or early spring.
