​When you receive your plugs or 7cm potted plants, either pot them up or plant them out into their permanent positions. Water as needed, but take care not to overwater. For the best results, protect young plants from snails and slugs.
Chrysanthemum ‘Dorothy’ is a charming heirloom variety that exemplifies the old-world elegance of traditional chrysanthemums.  ‘Dorothy’ is treasured by collectors and heritage growers for its distinctive form and flowering habit. ‘Dorothy’ is a mid- to late-season bloomer. This makes it a valuable addition for growers aiming to extend their chrysanthemum display into autumn, especially for cut flower arrangements or exhibition work.

  • Bloom Size: Large (often 13 cm across)
  • Colour: Pink
  • Growth Habit: Upright, vigorous growth
  • Flowering Period: Typically autumn (April to May)
  • Light: Prefers full sun, at least 6 hours daily.
  • Soil: Well-draining, rich in organic matter, slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
  • Spacing: 30–45 cm apart to allow air circulation.
2. Watering & Feeding
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Feeding:
    • Early growth: High-nitrogen fertiliser for leafy growth.
    • Mid-season: Balanced fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10 or similar).
    • Budding stage: High-potassium fertiliser to enhance bloom quality.
3. Pruning & Pinching
  • Pinching:
    • Pinch out the growing tips when plants reach 15 cm tall to encourage bushier growth.
    • January 20th or before, cut back again to approx 15cm above soil level.                                                                                                     
  • Disbudding: Remove side buds if aiming for large show blooms.
4. Staking & Support
  • Due to its tall stems and heavy flowers, use stakes or grow through support rings or flower support netting.
5. Pest & Disease Management
  • Common Pests: Aphids, thrips, spider mites – treat with insecticidal soap, neem oil or your favourite insecticides and fungicides.
  • Diseases: Watch for powdery mildew and botrytis; ensure good airflow and avoid wet foliage.
6. Flowering & Exhibition Preparation
  • Shading: In NZ conditions, shading can extend the bloom season for exhibition timing.
Storage: Cut flowers last well in a cool environment; hydration is key.
