When you receive your plugs or 7cm potted plants, either pot them up or plant them out into their permanent positions. Water as needed, but take care not to overwater. For the best results, protect young plants from snails and slugs.
Chrysanthemum ‘Bambi’ is an early-flowering variety that brings a soft, cheerful presence to the late summer and early autumn garden. Known for its reliability and generous bloom time, ‘Bambi’ is one of the first chrysanthemums to flower, making it a perfect choice for extending the seasonal colour in both garden beds and cut flower displays.
1. Planting & Positioning
- Type: Reflex/Incurve
- Bloom Size: Large (often 15–20 cm across)
- Colour: Peach to Apricot
- Growth Habit: Upright, vigorous growth
- Flowering Period: Typically Late Summer to Early Autumn (December–March)
1. Planting & Positioning
- Light: Prefers full sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Soil: Well-draining, rich in organic matter, slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
- Spacing: 30–45 cm apart to allow air circulation.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
- Feeding:
- Early growth: High-nitrogen fertilizer for leafy growth.
- Mid-season: Balanced fertilizer (NPK 10-10-10 or similar).
- Budding stage: High-potassium fertilizer to enhance bloom quality.
- Pinching:
- Pinch out the growing tips when plants reach 15 cm tall to encourage bushier growth.
- Disbudding: Remove side buds if aiming for large show blooms.
- Due to its tall stems and heavy flowers, use stakes or grow through support rings or flower support netting.
- Common Pests: Aphids, thrips, spider mites – treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Diseases: Watch for powdery mildew and botrytis; ensure good airflow and avoid wet foliage.
- Shading: In NZ conditions, shading can extend the bloom season for exhibition timing.
