When you receive your plugs or 7cm potted plants, either pot them up or plant them out into their permanent positions. Water as needed, but take care not to overwater. For the best results, protect young plants from snails and slugs.
Chrysanthemum ‘Purple Margaret’ is an early-season bloomer that flowers twice in one season, making it an excellent choice for both the home garden and the flower farm. It’s a strong, reliable grower suited to the mid-border, producing a generous first flush of blooms early in the season. After flowering, simply cut the plant back and feed well, and a second flush will follow toward the end of February or early March.

Blooming Period: December to March
Suitable For: Cut flowers, garden displays, and exhibitions
Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots

  • Flower Type: Decorative
  • Colour: A deep pink to purple.
  • Bloom size: 8 to 10cm size bloom
  • Bloom Time: Early Season, typically December to March in New Zealand
  • Growth Habit: Tip in October, then prune back to 15cm above ground level after the first flowering, feed for a great second flush of blooms. Height to 1.2m
Cultivation
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser during the growing season. Incorporate sulphate of potash in late summer to enhance bloom quality and stem strength.
  • Disbudding: Can be grown as a spray; disbudding (removing side buds) can produce enchanting blooms.
  • Staking or netting will be beneficial in windy conditions.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, ensuring good drainage to prevent root rot.
Special Features & Uses
  • Versatility: Ideal for garden beds, borders, and containers, as well as for use in cut flower arrangements due to its sturdy stems and long vase life.
