When you receive your plugs or 7cm potted plants, either pot them up or plant them out into their permanent positions. Water as needed, but take care not to overwater. For the best results, protect young plants from snails and slugs.
‘Mairehau Dainty’ is a lovely garden, cushion-type chrysanthemum that produces masses of seashell-pink, almost fluorescent blooms on plenty of stems. It’s a true all-rounder perfect for garden beds, borders, containers, and the cutting garden. An easy-to-grow, early-flowering variety, it rewards with two bloom seasons. After the first flush, simply prune it back and give it a good feed, then enjoy a second round of flowers in late February.

Blooming Period: March to April
Suitable For: Cut flowers, garden displays, and exhibitions
Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots

Characteristics:
  • Flower Type: Cushion
  • Colour: Blush pink with an orange-tinged centre
  • Bloom Size: Small to medium (typically 3–5 cm in diameter)
  • Bloom Time: Summer to early autumn (December to March in New Zealand)
  • Growth Habit: Bush style with long, slender stems, multiple blooms per stem, can be disbudded. Height 60cm
Cultivation & Care:
  • Pruning:
    • Cut back after the first blooming
    • Light tidy-up in February to remove weak shoots
  • Fertilizing:
    • Balanced slow-release fertiliser (e.g., Novatec or Osmocote)
    • Additional potassium (sulphate of potash) before flowering to enhance bloom quality
  • Pinching/Disbudding:
    • Pinching early in the season encourages multiple blooms per stem
    • Minimal disbudding is needed, as this variety thrives with multiple flowers
  • Support: May need light staking or netting to keep stems upright
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but well-drained
Special Features & Uses:
  • Excellent as a filler flower in arrangements, adding texture and contrast
  • A low-maintenance chrysanthemum that produces abundant blooms with the bonus of two flowerings in the season, suitable for the home garden and Flower farm.
