Chrysanthemum ‘Mavis’ (Early Flowering Garden Type) is a beautiful, reliable garden chrysanthemum loved for its soft pink blooms and early flowering habit. Unlike later exhibition varieties, ‘Mavis’ is bred to perform outdoors, making it a great choice for garden beds, borders, and cut flowers. A real bonus is that it flowers twice in one season. After the first flush, simply prune it back, give it a feed, and keep up regular watering, and it will reward you with a second round of blooms later in the season. An easy, generous plant that earns its place in the garden.

Blooming Period: March to April
Suitable For: Cut flowers, garden displays, and exhibitions
Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots
Characteristics:
- Flower Type: Pom pom
- Colour: Soft pink, sometimes deepening with cooler temperatures
- Bloom Size: Pom pom to 5cm, full blooms with a classic decorative form
- Bloom Time: Early autumn (flowering from late summer to early autumn, typically February–April in New Zealand)
- Growth Habit: Bushy, compact, and upright—ideal for garden planting and cut flowers
- Pruning:
- Late spring/early summer pinch (December) to encourage branching and more blooms
- No need for a hard January prune like exhibition varieties
- Fertilizing:
- Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser (e.g., Novatec or Osmocote) during active growth
- Apply sulphate of potash in late summer to enhance flower quality and durability
- Pinching/Disbudding:
- Pinching in early growth stages encourages more flower-bearing stems
- No heavy disbudding required, as this variety is meant to produce multiple blooms per stem. But there is never any harm in experimenting with disbudding.
- Support: Generally self-supporting, but light staking may help in exposed locations
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, but ensure good drainage to prevent root issues
- Early flowering provides colour in the garden before many other chrysanthemums bloom
- Low-maintenance and well-suited for outdoor beds, borders, and containers
- Excellent cut flower with a long vase life
- Attracts pollinators, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens
