Chrysanthemum ‘Dark Pink Dark Eye’ is a gorgeous double decorative variety, prized for its rich, deep pink petals and striking dark central eye. This variety is a standout in both gardens and floral arrangements, thanks to its fully double blooms and inviting colour palette.

Blooming Period: March to April
Suitable For:
Cut flowers, garden displays, and exhibitions
Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots

Characteristics:
  • Flower Type: Double Decorative
  • Colour: Lighter pink outer petals leading to a darker centre
  • Bloom Size: Medium (typically 5cm to 8cm in diameter)
  • Bloom Time: Mid-to-late autumn (April–May in New Zealand)
  • Growth Habit: Upright with strong, slender stems and multiple blooms per stem. 1m in height if cut back in early January. The time at which this cutting back is done can determine the bloom date.
Cultivation & Care:
  • Pruning:
    • January prune to encourage multiple stems or bushier  growth
    • Light tidy-up in February to remove weak shoots
  • Fertilizing:
    • Balanced slow-release fertiliser (e.g., Novatec or Osmocote)
    • Additional potassium (sulphate of potash) before bud formation to enhance bloom quality
  • Pinching/Disbudding:
    • Pinching early in the season encourages multiple blooms per stem
    • Minimal disbudding is needed, as this variety thrives with multiple flowers
  • Support: May need light staking or netting to keep stems upright
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but well-drained
Special Features & Uses:
  • Highly popular in floristry and bouquets
  • A low-maintenance chrysanthemum that produces abundant blooms suitable for the home garden and  Flower farm.
