When you receive your plugs or 7cm potted plants, either pot them up or plant them out into their permanent positions. Water as needed, but take care not to overwater. For the best results, protect young plants from snails and slugs.
Chrysanthemum ‘Apricot Shuntung’ is a breathtaking variety known for its warm apricot tones.  Its medium-growing stems, full blooms, and excellent vase life make it a sought-after choice for both cut-flower gardens and as a show flower for garden enthusiasts. Being an early-flowering cultivar, you get two flushes of flowers a season; often, the March-flowering is a deeper apricot colour.

Blooming Period: December to March
Suitable For: Cut flowers, garden displays, and exhibitions
Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots

Characteristics:
  • Flower Type: Double Decorative
  • Colour: Warm apricot with subtle peach tones
  • Bloom Size: Medium size, depending on cultivation and disbudding
  • Bloom Time: Typically flowers from December to March in New Zealand
  • Growth Habit: Upright, strong stems, making it great for cutting and floral arrangements or the middle of the garden border.
Cultivation & Care:
  • Pruning: Give a light tidy up during the active growing time from October to December.
  • Fertilising: Balanced slow-release fertiliser (such as Novatec) with additional potassium (e.g., sulphate of potash) as buds form
  • Pinching/Disbudding: Pinching in early November to mid-December encourages multiple stems, leading to blooming 12 to 14 weeks later. Disbudding is not usually recommended for this cultivar.
  • Support: Needs staking or netting to prevent stems from flopping, especially in windy areas
  • Watering: Consistent moisture but well-drained soil to prevent root rot
Uses & Special Features:
  • A favourite for cut flowers due to its elegant, warm-toned petals
  • Suitable for horticultural shows with careful cultivation
  • Works well in bouquets and floral arrangements due to its soft, romantic hue
  • A good early garden display.
