  • Facebook
Chrysanthemum Shamrock is a unique and eye-catching variety known for its striking lime-green, almost chartreuse-coloured blooms. This unusual colour sets it apart from traditional chrysanthemums, making it a popular choice for the garden bed, floral arrangements and exhibition displays. The flowers are typically fully double, with tightly packed, spooned or quilled petals.

Growing Options: Can be grown in the ground or in pots

Characteristics:
  • Flower Type: Open thicker quilled spider
  • Colour: Vibrant green, sometimes with a hint of yellow undertones.
  • Bloom Size: Medium to large, depending on cultivation and disbudding
  • Bloom Time: Mid-to-late autumn (April–May in New Zealand)
  • Growth Habit: Upright, with strong stems, making it ideal for cutting and floral arrangements
Cultivation & Care:
  • Pruning:
    • January prune to encourage strong branching and healthy growth
    • A light tidy-up in February to remove weak shoots
  • Fertilizing:
    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (e.g., Novatec or Osmocote) in early growth stages
    • Use sulphate of potash leading up to flowering to enhance bloom color and strength
  • Pinching/Disbudding:
    • Pinching in early growth stages encourages a well-shaped plant
    • Disbudding (removing side buds) can be done to produce larger, show-quality blooms
  • Support: Requires staking or netting due to its tall stems and large flowers
  • Watering: Maintain consistent moisture but ensure good drainage to prevent root rot
Special Features & Uses:
  • Exquisite cut flower, with long-lasting blooms and strong stems
  • Ideal for floral arrangements, thanks to its unique champagne-gold hue
  • Popular for horticultural shows due to its refined petal structure and elegant form
  • Adds a warm, interesting touch to garden borders and floral displays
